An intact Renaissance ideal city on the Po plain south of Mantua, Sabbioneta was built from scratch between 1556 and 1591 by Vespasiano Gonzaga as a seat of learning and governance. Its hexagonal plan of streets, fortified walls with corner bastions, a ducal palace, Olympic Theatre, and synagogue are all contained within the original perimeter. The absence of later accretions makes Sabbioneta one of the most legible examples of Renaissance urban planning in Europe.
