A prosperous city on the Via Emilia in western Emilia-Romagna, Parma is home to the twelfth-century baptistery—one of the most important Romanesque-Gothic monuments in northern Italy—and to the frescoed camera di San Paolo painted by Correggio in 1519. The city centre is dense with Baroque churches and palazzi, and remains closely associated with the production of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and Prosciutto di Parma in the surrounding countryside.
