The fourth-largest lake in Italy, Trasimeno occupies a shallow basin in western Umbria and is notable for its biodiversity rather than its depth—nowhere exceeding 7 metres. Three islands dot the lake: Isola Maggiore has a fishing village and medieval church, Isola Polvese supports a nature reserve, and Isola Minore is uninhabited. The site of Hannibal's ambush of a Roman army in 217 BC lies along the northern shore near Tuoro sul Trasimeno.
