A compact hill town on the lower slopes of Monte Subasio in the Vale of Spoleto, Spello is notable for the Baglioni Chapel in the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which contains a complete fresco cycle by Pinturicchio completed in 1501. Roman Hispellum left three gates and sections of city walls that survive as street boundaries. The town hosts the Infiorata each Corpus Christi, covering its main streets in complex floral carpets.
