A well-preserved medieval town on the slopes of Monte Ingino in northern Umbria, Gubbio retains its fourteenth-century civic architecture largely intact: the Palazzo dei Consoli and Palazzo Pretorio flank a raised platform piazza that projects from the hillside on vaulted substructures. The town is best known for the Corsa dei Ceri, held each 15 May, in which teams race three-tiered wooden structures uphill to the basilica of Sant'Ubaldo. The Roman theatre in the valley below is in a good state of preservation.
