An unusual hill village in the Val d'Orcia, Bagno Vignoni is built around a Renaissance thermal pool—the Piazza delle Sorgenti—rather than a conventional square. The large rectangular basin of steaming sulphurous water once used by pilgrims and popes is now for viewing only; thermal bathing takes place in outdoor pools downstream. The setting, with low stone buildings and steam rising in cool morning air, is a frequent location for cinematographers.
