Ten sculpted female figures, half woman and half plant, line the burial chamber at Sveshtari — caryatids of a kind found nowhere else in the Thracian lands. Built in the 3rd century BC for a ruler of the Getes, a Thracian people in touch with the Hellenistic world, the tomb lay hidden until 1982, when excavation near the village revealed its painted lunette and polychrome carving intact. UNESCO added the tomb to the World Heritage List in 1985.
