The westernmost of the major Italian pre-Alpine lakes, Lake Orta is smaller and quieter than Como or Maggiore, and is known for its island settlement, Isola San Giulio. The town of Orta San Giulio on the western shore retains a medieval street plan of colonnaded palaces and small piazzas. The Sacro Monte di Orta above the town—a pilgrimage complex of twenty chapels built from 1591 onward—is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
