Straddling the Lombard-Piedmontese border and extending into Switzerland, Lake Maggiore is the second-largest lake in Italy and renowned for its Borromean Islands—Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori—which rise from the water near Stresa. The western lakeside road passes through palm-lined promenades and Art Nouveau grand hotels. The Borromean Palace gardens on Isola Bella, with their tiered terraces and baroque statuary, are among the most elaborate in the Italian lake district.
