At 2,236 metres, this high mountain pass between the Giau plateau and Cortina d'Ampezzo places photographers amid open tundra with 360-degree Dolomite panoramas. The rifugio at the summit sits within a bowl of peaks—Nuvolau, Croda da Lago, and Ra Gusela among them—and the road itself, a regular stage in the Giro d'Italia, is lined with photogenic hairpin bends. Late September brings dusting of early snow to the high terrain.
