Pirin National Park

Glacial lakes strung between limestone summits define Pirin National Park, which climbs from just over 1,000 metres to 2,914 metres in the mountains of south-west Bulgaria. Conifer forests give way with altitude to alpine meadows, screes and bare karst peaks scattered with waterfalls and caves. UNESCO first inscribed the park in 1983 and later broadened the World Heritage area to roughly 40,000 hectares of high-mountain terrain.
