Cumbre Vieja is the active volcanic ridge forming the southern half of La Palma, aligned north–south along the island's spine and punctuated by a series of cinder cones and craters from historical eruptions. It gained international attention following the Tajogaite eruption of September to December 2021, which produced extensive new lava flows that reached the coast and added land area to the island. Hiking trails cross the ridge through pine forest and lava fields, passing viewpoints over both coasts.
