Timanfaya encompasses the vast lava fields produced by volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736, which buried several villages and transformed a quarter of Lanzarote. The landscape is almost entirely devoid of vegetation, composed of contorted basalt, cinder cones, and lava tubes in shades of black, ochre, and deep red. Geothermal activity remains close to the surface — temperatures a few centimetres underground can exceed 100 degrees Celsius — and the park is accessible primarily via a guided bus route called the Ruta de los Volcanes.
