The Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park in La Mancha comprises a chain of fifteen interconnected lakes cascading down a valley in Ciudad Real province via travertine dams and waterfalls. The turquoise and emerald colours of the water, fed by the Guadiana river system, stand in vivid contrast to the surrounding arid plateau. The area is mentioned in Cervantes' Don Quixote as the site of the Cave of Montesinos.
