The Tabernas Desert in Almería province is the only true desert in Europe, receiving less than 200 mm of annual rainfall and characterised by deeply eroded badlands of marl and gypsum. Sergio Leone shot several of his Spaghetti Western films here in the 1960s, and the remaining film-set towns are open to visitors. The rambla (dry riverbed) network and the surrounding Sierra Alhamilla provide remarkable photographic landscapes.
