Nerja sits on a coastal promontory east of Málaga, its clifftop Balcón de Europa terrace offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the Sierra Nevada in the distance. The Cuevas de Nerja cave system, discovered in 1959, contains Paleolithic cave paintings and a vast stalactite-draped concert hall used for summer performances. Small cove beaches such as Playa Calahonda are tucked below the cliffs.
