Spain's southeastern corner shelters a volcanic coastal landscape of sea stacks, black-sand beaches, and semi-arid scrubland in Almería province. Cabo de Gata is the most arid region on the European mainland, with saline lagoons that attract flamingos and wading birds seasonally. The beaches of Playa de los Muertos and Cala de Enmedio are accessible only on foot and remain among the least developed on the Spanish coast.
