A port town at the mouth of the Seine estuary where the Vieux Bassin harbour is framed by a distinctive row of sixteenth and seventeenth-century slate-fronted houses reflected in the tidal water. The Vieux Bassin attracted the Boudin, Monet, and the broader circle of Impressionist painters who documented the play of Norman light on water. The narrow lanes of the Sainte-Catherine quarter and the timber-framed church of the same name represent distinct Norman vernacular building traditions.
