Central Amazon Conservation Complex

Flooded várzea forest, blackwater igapó and an ever-shifting web of lakes and channels form the biggest protected area in the whole Amazon Basin — and one of the most biodiverse corners of the planet. Its waters hold more species of electric fish than anywhere else on Earth, alongside giant arapaima, black caiman, Amazonian manatees and two kinds of river dolphin. UNESCO inscribed the complex on the World Heritage List in 2000.
