Historic Centre of the Town of Goiás

Vila Boa de Goiás grew rich on 18th-century gold, and its winding lanes still follow the contours a mining camp traced through the hills of central Brazil. Whitewashed houses, baroque churches and cobbled streets were raised from local materials by local hands, giving the modest town a rare unity that UNESCO honoured with World Heritage status in 2001 as a document of Brazil's colonial push inland during the 18th and 19th centuries.
