A narrow glacial valley in the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons, the Vale of Ewyas contains the ruins of Llanthony Priory — an Augustinian monastery founded in 1118 that remains one of the most romantically sited religious ruins in Britain. The single road following the River Honddu is little wider than a car in places, and the enclosing hillsides rise steeply to open moorland above. The light in the valley at morning and evening is particularly favoured by landscape photographers working the southern edge of Snowdonia.
