The most powerful of Edward I's Welsh fortresses, Caernarfon Castle was built from 1283 on the site of an earlier Norman motte-and-bailey. Its distinctive eagle towers, polygonal in section rather than round, and the patterned stonework incorporating bands of darker stone were deliberately designed to evoke the walls of Constantinople and assert imperial authority. The castle is part of the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd UNESCO World Heritage Site.
