Britain's first national park, designated in 1951, the Peak District divides into distinct northern and southern zones: the Dark Peak of gritstone moorland and blanket bog, and the White Peak of limestone dales and dry stone walls. Stanage Edge, a gritstone escarpment running for six kilometres above the Hope Valley, is one of England's premier rock-climbing destinations. The villages of Castleton, Bakewell, and Eyam each offer a different perspective on the region's history, from Saxon earthworks to plague isolation.
