Where Portuguese ships first sighted Brazil in 1500, ribbons of Atlantic forest still meet the sea. The eight reserves of the Discovery Coast, spread across Bahia and Espírito Santo, protect 112,000 hectares of rainforest and coastal restinga scrub — part of one of the most biodiverse, and most drastically reduced, forest systems on the planet, dense with species found nowhere else. UNESCO inscribed the reserves in 1999.
