A Roman frontier fortification built on the order of Emperor Hadrian from 122 CE, stretching 117 kilometres from the Solway Firth in the west to Wallsend on Tyne in the east. The central section, particularly around Steel Rigg and Sycamore Gap, follows the dramatic Whin Sill escarpment and offers the most photogenic surviving lengths of wall with views across open Northumberland moorland. The wall, its associated forts, and the Vallum earthwork together constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
