A tidal island in Mount's Bay off the Cornish coast, St Michael's Mount is connected to the village of Marazion by a causeway of natural granite that floods at high tide. A medieval church and castle crown the summit of the rocky granite island, which has been fortified and inhabited since at least the twelfth century. The view from the Marazion shore across the water to the island is at its most striking when the causeway is submerged and the mount appears to float.
