The highest chalk sea cliff in Britain at 162 metres, Beachy Head stands at the eastern end of the South Downs where the escarpment meets the English Channel. The lighthouse standing on the chalk platform below the cliff — its red band visible from far out to sea — provides a distinctive foreground element in photographs looking back along the cliff line to the west. The surrounding downland supports nationally scarce chalk grassland flora.
