Diamonds drew prospectors deep into the stony highlands of Minas Gerais in the 18th century, and Diamantina grew wealthy on their finds. Whitewashed houses climb steep streets in a settlement that proved culture could flourish amid a harsh mountain landscape, its churches and vernacular Baroque still intact. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre of the town of Diamantina in 1999.
