The seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the spiritual centre of the Church of England, Canterbury grew around the cathedral that has drawn pilgrims since Thomas Becket was murdered here in 1170. Canterbury Cathedral, together with St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church, forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site representing the earliest Christian sites in England. The medieval street plan survives largely intact within the city walls, and the West Gate towers are among the best-preserved medieval city gates in England.
