York is defined by its medieval walls, which survive for almost the full three-kilometre circuit around the city centre and can be walked along their rampart-top walkway. York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, contains more than half of all surviving medieval stained glass in England. The Shambles, a medieval street of overhanging timber-framed buildings, has been continuously occupied since before the Norman Conquest.
