A prehistoric stone circle on Salisbury Plain, Stonehenge was erected in phases between approximately 3000 and 1500 BCE and remains the most architecturally sophisticated prehistoric megalithic monument in Europe. The sarsen stones, transported from Marlborough Downs some 25 kilometres to the north, weigh up to 25 tonnes each and are precisely aligned to the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. The surrounding landscape contains hundreds of associated Neolithic and Bronze Age features, all included in the World Heritage Site.
