Low stone footbridges cross the River Windrush as it runs through the centre of Bourton-on-the-Water, a Cotswold village whose wide, shallow stream is flanked by greens and golden limestone buildings. The village attracts high visitor numbers in summer, but the early morning hours before the car parks fill offer a more contemplative experience. A model village in the garden of one of the pubs recreates the main street at one-ninth scale, a curious local attraction.
