One of the quieter lakes in the western Lake District, Buttermere is ringed by fells including High Stile and Fleetwith Pike. The five-kilometre circuit of the lake on a well-maintained path is accessible to most walkers and passes through a short tunnel blasted through the cliff face. Autumn colour in the surrounding woodland makes it a favoured subject for landscape photographers.
