A narrow, heavily wooded valley south of Derwentwater, Borrowdale is considered one of the most scenic valleys in the Lake District. Ancient sessile oak woodland clings to the valley sides above the River Derwent, and the tight gorge at the Jaws of Borrowdale creates a natural drama rarely found in English landscapes. The villages of Rosthwaite and Stonethwaite provide quiet bases for walking deeper into the fells.
