A 29-kilometre barrier beach of graded pebbles stretching from Portland to West Bay, Chesil Beach is one of the longest tombolo formations in Europe. The shingle grades systematically from small pea-sized stones at the western end to large cobbles near Portland, a feature that historically allowed fishermen to identify their position in fog. The Fleet lagoon behind it supports internationally important wetland habitats.
