Kilkenny is a medieval city on the River Nore in the southeast of Ireland, built around a Norman castle that has been occupied almost continuously since the twelfth century. The city's medieval street plan, with narrow lanes called slips, a preserved cathedral, and a high concentration of craft workshops, gives it a distinctive character among Irish cities. The castle's restored state apartments and surrounding parkland are the most visited heritage site in the city.
