Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow contains one of Ireland's largest formal gardens, laid out in the mid-nineteenth century on a hillside with views south to the Sugar Loaf mountain. The garden comprises terraced Italian-style parterres, a Japanese garden, walled gardens, and a lake, surrounding an eighteenth-century Palladian house that was gutted by fire in 1974 and partially restored. The Powerscourt Waterfall, one of the highest in Ireland at 121 metres, is located within the estate grounds a short drive from the main house.
