Croagh Patrick is a 764-metre quartzite pyramid rising from the south Mayo plain above Clew Bay, traditionally identified as the site where Saint Patrick fasted for forty days in the fifth century. The mountain has been a place of Christian pilgrimage for over 1,500 years, with the annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage in late July drawing large numbers of walkers, some barefoot. From the summit, the view extends over the island-studded expanse of Clew Bay and northwest toward Achill Island.
