The Aran Islands are three limestone islands — Inis Mór, Inis Meáin, and Inis Oírr — lying at the mouth of Galway Bay and sharing the same karst geology as the Burren on the Clare mainland. The islands preserve an extensive network of early Christian and pre-Christian monuments, most notably Dún Aonghasa, a clifftop stone fort on Inis Mór perched 100 metres above the Atlantic. The islands form one of the largest Irish-speaking communities in Ireland.
