Twelve soapstone prophets gesture from the terrace stairway of Bom Jesus do Congonhas, crowning achievement of Aleijadinho, master of the Brazilian Baroque. Raised in the later 1700s in Minas Gerais, the sanctuary pairs a church with an Italian-inspired Rococo interior with seven chapels on the slope below, where the sculptor's polychrome Stations of the Cross figures reach rare emotional force. UNESCO inscribed the sanctuary in 1985.
