The Rock of Cashel is a limestone outcrop rising abruptly from the Tipperary plain, bearing a dense complex of medieval ecclesiastical buildings including a twelfth-century round tower, a Romanesque chapel, and a Gothic cathedral. The site served as the seat of the kings of Munster for several centuries before becoming an episcopal centre. The carved tympanum of Cormac's Chapel, constructed in the 1130s, represents one of the earliest examples of Romanesque sculpture in Ireland.
