Estonia's easternmost city stands on the border with Russia, separated from the Russian city of Ivangorod by the Narva River, where two medieval castles face each other across the water. The Hermann Castle on the Estonian bank is well preserved, and the Ivangorod Fortress is visible in its entirety from the ramparts opposite. The city was almost entirely destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt in Soviet neoclassical style, giving it a character unlike any other Estonian city.
