A red-brick Gothic castle occupying a small island in Lake Galvė, connected to shore by wooden bridges, 28 kilometres west of Vilnius. Built by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as a royal residence in the late 14th century and restored in the 20th century, it is now Lithuania's most visited historic monument. The lake setting — castle reflected in calm water, forested shores on all sides — is one of the most photographed scenes in the Baltic states.
