Latvia's third-largest city on the Baltic coast, notable for Karosta — a former Tsarist and Soviet naval base at the city's northern edge where vast brick military buildings, an ornate Russian Orthodox naval cathedral, and a decommissioned military prison survive largely intact. The city is also known for a vibrant music culture rooted in the many wind instruments manufactured here historically, and its 24-kilometre sandy beach is among the widest in the eastern Baltic.
