Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad

Eleven graceful arches carry the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge 179.5 metres across the Drina at Višegrad — a late-16th-century commission from the grand vizier whose name it bears, executed by Sinan, the supreme architect of classical Ottoman civilisation. Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić later made the crossing the protagonist of his novel The Bridge on the Drina. UNESCO inscribed the bridge in 2007 as a masterwork of Ottoman engineering at its height.
