Estonia's largest island in the Baltic Sea, distinguished by a landscape of juniper meadows, limestone cliffs, traditional thatched-roof windmills, and one of the best-preserved medieval bishop's castles in the Baltic region at Kuressaare. A meteorite crater lake at Kaali in the island's interior is among the youngest impact craters on earth still visible at the surface. The island's relative isolation has preserved older rural traditions and dialect differences from mainland Estonia.
