A medieval lake castle founded in 1475 and positioned on a small rocky island in the Saimaa lake system near the town of Savonlinna, making it one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in northern Europe. Three round towers connected by curtain walls rise directly from the water, their reflections rippling across the surrounding lake. Each summer the castle hosts the Savonlinna Opera Festival, one of the most celebrated opera events in the Nordic countries.
