Finland's largest national park covers over 2,850 square kilometres of subarctic wilderness in the far north, centred on the Lemmenjoki river valley where gold prospecting has occurred since the 1940s. Open fells dominate the higher ground while the river corridor supports dense forest of birch and pine. Boat trips on the river provide access to the interior, and a handful of wilderness huts allow extended traverses through one of the least-visited corners of Finnish Lapland.
