The regional capital of Finnish Lapland sits at the confluence of the Ounasjoki and Kemijoki rivers, precisely on the Arctic Circle. Rebuilt after near-total destruction during the Second World War, the modern city was master-planned by Alvar Aalto in the shape of a reindeer antler when viewed from above. In winter it serves as a base for aurora hunting, reindeer safaris, and husky sledding across the surrounding forest landscapes.
