Twelve kings of Dahomey ruled from Abomey between 1625 and 1900, and each — save Akaba, who kept a separate enclosure — raised his palace inside the same earthen-walled royal compound, honouring the spatial traditions and materials of his predecessors. The cob walls and celebrated bas-reliefs of the surviving palaces carry the memory of one of West Africa's most powerful kingdoms. UNESCO inscribed the Royal Palaces of Abomey in 1985.
